He was admitted to a private hospital in Essex for a “life-changing” operation after suffering from a secret illness.

The 33-year-old star now faces two months of recovery after suffering a hiatal hernia, which has already been treated.

taking to Instagram To update his 483,000 followers, Liam, known simply as Gatsby, said: ” I would still have been in Los Angeles, but the reason I came home was to have surgery.

“I’ve been suffering from hiatal hernia and acid reflux for a few years, but it got to the point where I couldn’t eat and drink fluids at the same time without it coming back.”

In the snapshot he could be seen lying in his hospital bed while at The Holly Private Hospital in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

With an unimpressed look on his face but a thumbs up, Gatsby seemed to be in a good mood considering he had just been through a session in surgery.

The second snap saw him posing for a selfie with his ultra-glam mom, who’s back from Los Angeles to take care of her son.

His mother even flew from Los Angeles to Essex to take care of her son.



A hiatal hernia is when part of your stomach moves into your chest and is rare in people under the age of 50.

The star is believed to have undergone minimally invasive surgery (known medically as laparoscopy).

According to the National Health Service This involves making small cuts in the belly and is done under general anesthesia.

In his caption, Gatsby later gave fans some insight into living with the condition, writing: “Imagine eating and being thirsty and not being able to drink a glass of water with it or the food you just ate will come back. “. .

“Also, the burning taste of acid in your mouth most mornings.

“I hope this surgery that repairs my stomach and hiatal hernia will change my life.

“I am not looking forward to the next 6 weeks on a liquid/soft food diet so any advice from people who have had this surgery would be greatly appreciated x.”

He then added: “Swipe to see who has flown thousands of miles to take care of me in my two month recovery.”

Friends and fans of the star were quick to comment on Gatsby’s health update, with one fan commenting, “I have a hiatal hernia and it’s horrible so I totally feel you. Hope you get well soon!”

Another added: “Get well soon nothing like having your mom there.”

While a third wrote: “Get well soon Gatsby your mom is 1 in a million bless her.”

Gatsby has been a favorite on TOWIE since he first appeared on the show in 2015.



He later posted a snapshot to his Instagram Stories showing him holding a remote on his bed, while watching Channel 4’s Four In A Bed.

Panning the camera around his room, Gatsby showed the secluded and private room and the view from his window.

With Gatsby facing six weeks off from work, it is unknown what this will mean for his appearances in the upcoming series of The only way is Essex.

Gatsby joined TOWIE in 2015, when he entered the scene as a friend of Lydia Bright.

She then became a permanent fixture and part of the main cast, even when Lydia left the show.
