Philippine smartphone market forecasts double-digit growth in 2022 after a 5.6% drop in 2021, says IDC

MANILA, February 28, 2022 – According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone TrackerPhilippine smartphone market decreased 5.6% YoY shipping 17.8 million units in 2021. Recurring lockdowns and global supply constraints in the second half of 2021 hampered market growth with multiple vendors they struggled to fill orders during the holiday season, resulting in low inventories across all channels.

The final quarter of the year fell 23.3% year over year, even as shipments increased 18.4% quarter over quarter (QoQ) during the peak holiday shopping period. The gradual reopening of retail stores resulted in more consumers shopping through physical stores. IDC is optimistic about double-digit growth in the smartphone market in 2022 as the market recovers from a weak second half of 2021 and as supply constraints ease.

“With 5G networks rolling out across the country, growth will be driven by 5G smartphones, which accounted for 12.7% of shipments in 2021. The share is expected to double by 2022. Additionally, aggressive pricing among Chinese vendors have dragged the average price of 5G Android smartphones down from US$471 in 4Q20 to US$386 in 4Q21, with some 5G models priced below US$200,” he says.
