Michael Edwards was always going to be a tough act to follow at Anfield, but Julian Ward’s first summer in sole charge of Liverpool transfer business could become infinitely more complicated if sadio mane yes, as expected, he decides to look for new pastures in the coming weeks.

Mane hinted that there was already made a decision about his future before saturday night Champions League final defeat, with reports suggesting the prolific attacker is being courted by Bayern Munich. Mane’s powerful Liverpool forward three, Mohammed Salah Y Roberto Firmino it’s been the envy of many across Europe for the last few years, but now it’s about to be dismantled, and Ward now has the unenviable task of rebuilding it.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a host of potential replacements have already been linked to Liverpool before anything concrete regarding Mane has had a chance to materialize. According to the Portuguese publication Correio da Manha, via SportWitnessBenfica star Darwin Nunez is a name that is of interest to the Liverpool hierarchy, but seeking a deal for the highly sought after 22-year-old would come with its caveats.

For starters, Benfica’s demands for Nunez are said to exceed €100m (£85m); a sum that few will be able to take off. While Liverpool could afford such an outlay, a deal would be quite a change from their usual transfer policy.

Despite Jurgen Klopp and Edwards have spent a lot, a lot of money in recent years, those types of outlays are usually reserved for players who are considered the finished article, like Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk. While Núñez, who has scored 34 goals in all competitions in Portugal this year, has enjoyed a fine season, the former Almeira star is far from the finished article; and there are no guarantees that his form will transfer from the Portuguese Primeira league to the Premier league.

There are similarities between Núñez and Luis Díaz, who started working on Merseyside in January. However, Diaz’s transfer fee was less than half of Nunez’s proposed sum, and the Colombian was not signed specifically to replace one of the Reds’ untouchable trio from the start.

Liverpool have earned a reputation for being astute in the transfer market for a number of years and one bad deal would not make their previous successes obsolete.

But astute transfer decisions have been the catalyst behind Liverpool’s recent renaissance, and it’s clear there’s no room for error at the top of the Premier League at the moment. The Reds could set back years on the pitch if they start to take the big calls in the transfer market badly; particularly when it comes to replacing someone as pivotal as Mane.

A host of clubs may be ready to nab Nunez this summer, but the Benfica star could be a gamble that Ward and the Liverpool hierarchy simply cannot afford at the moment.
