Roll up! Roll up! It’s the last day of the celebrity circus trial! Get your seats while you can. feast your eyes on amber heardThe tears and cheeky smile of Captain Jack Sparrow! That’s right: after six seemingly endless weeks, the Depp vs Heard trial is finally coming to an end.
Today, lawyers from both teams will deliver their closing statements before the jury deliberates on its decision. However, whoever wins the case, it seems certain that Johnny Depp has won the day.
Before the trial, Depp’s star seemed to be on the wane. His reputation was marred by claims of tardiness and substance dependency and his box office appeal was marred by a series of flops. So after a decade of serving turkeys and allegedly squandering his $650 million fortune, Depp used the televised trial to show the movie studios that he still has it. It’s still a box office draw.
It has a sizeable and loyal fan base. who have been mobilized and revitalized by the libel trial – and are willing to excuse, overlook, dismiss or ignore even the star’s most grotesque behavior.
Y, no matter what social media has to say about Amber Heardthe evidence has shown that for all of Depp’s public joviality (shaking hands with every police officer outside the courtroom and his humorous asides with the cameraman), in private he can be downright disgusting.
Texting alone would be enough to end the career of anyone other than our roguish hero. What about her text message to former talent agent Christian Carino “I’m so fucking happy that she wants to go fight over this!!! She will hit the wall hard! And I can’t wait to get this waste of ac-guzzler out of my life! I have no pity, no fear, no shred of emotion, or what I once thought was love for this gold digger, low level, dime a dozen, mushy, no nonsense, dangling, overused, fish market flappy, i met a sublime fucking little russian. here… Which made me realize the time I blew that 50 cent stripper… I wouldn’t touch her with a fucking glove. I can only hope karma kicks in and takes away the gift of breath.”
But this was not Johnny speaking, declare his fans. This was his pain. The deep, dark pain of him. Amber Heard took him to every horrible act, every vile behavior, every abusive word.
The social media judge and jury delivered their verdict before the case had started and Depp was innocent. Innocent as a lamb. A cute, vulnerable, misogynistic, gaping little lamb. And his followers have made him proud. Crowds of supporters wait all day, even dressed up as shit.. Yes, you read that right: yelling for Depp during his arrival and departure from the court. The same crowds boo Heard during his arrival and departure. Each. Day.
Anyone who uses social media will know this. Depp’s supporters have also subjected Heard to a sustained campaign of online abuse.. Yesterday, during his rebuttal testimony, Heard told the jury what he had experienced. “I am harassed, humiliated, threatened every day…even just walking into this courtroom…sitting here facing the world…living the worst parts of my life, the things I have lived for they used to humiliate me… people want to kill me and they tell me every day. People want to put my baby in the microwave and they tell me.”
Heard’s bullying also means she’s isolated. Depp’s supporters harangue anyone associated with her. Witnesses who testified for her in the case have been bombarded with negative business reviews and insults on social media.
The hashtags #AmberHeardisapsychopath #AmberHeardisanabuser and #AmberHeardisaliar have been trending for the duration of the trial. Social media hasn’t seen this much hate since… well, forever. War criminals guilty of atrocities don’t get as much virulence. Serial killers and rapists are not on the receiving end of so much venom.

Don’t tell me this is because Heard deserves all the malice and hate thrown at her because she’s broke. Johnny DeppDepp life is laughing. Literally. He smiled, laughed, scoffed and bragged throughout the ordeal: just like his legal team. A UK court has already ruled that Depp assaulted Heard, so why do his supporters think they know better? At least the #WeJustDon’tLikeYouAmber hashtag is honest in bullying him.
What she suffered during her relationship with Depp, Heard is now enduring the abuse of thousands of people. That is indisputable. And it is inexcusable. Ten years from now, we’ll see documentaries and accompanying outrage hashtags about Heard’s egregious treatment and ask why we let it happen.
In the meantime, we’d better laugh at those memes that mock Heard’s testimony while we can, very soon the treatment of her will be seen for what it is: shameful.
