DAN WOOTTON: Kris and Kim Kardashian’s sex tape lies have been exposed

The shameless entrepreneurial spirit of the Kardashian clan is, in many ways, worthy of respect.

Turning a grainy sex tape ‘leak’ into a multi-million dollar business that has spawned the world’s most talked about celebrities for 15 years is a feat few could have accomplished.

But then again, how many mothers, according to Ray J, would actively advocate for their daughter to give the world a video showing her engaging in sexual activity with her then most famous boyfriend when she was 21?

While rumors about the origin of the sex tape have persisted for years, it only burst into the public domain this week due to two key incidents.

First, Kim tried to rewrite the story around the circumstances of what made her famous during episode two of her new Hulu reality show, when her ex-husband Kanye West handed over a Ray J hard drive that allegedly included previously unreleased sex tape footage. of the couple

Then yesterday, the largely forgotten hip hop star of yesteryear, who became collateral damage in the Kardashians’ thirsty quest for fame, gave a truly extraordinary exclusive interview to DailyMail.com, revealing for the first time all the circumstances surrounding the original release of the tape.

More from Dan Wootton for MailOnline…

Now a father fighting to salvage his reputation, Ray J’s revelations are damning and it’s clear to me that he has ended up the victim of this sordid saga.

He NEVER leaked the sex tape: He says it went into the public domain thanks to a deal Kris made with him and Kim, who, inspired by Paris Hilton’s X-rated fame, had full knowledge it was about to be released.

More specifically, it says that the only copy of the original video was in the hands of Kim herself, which she hid in a Nike shoe box under her bed, signifying her emotional breakdown on the reality show when Kanye returned the hard drive after claiming that Ray J was trying to extort money from the family was ‘crocodile tears’.

So far so shocking, it certainly goes against the prevailing narrative.

But I think Ray J is telling the truth.

He doesn’t deny that the initial launch was his idea, but then he got carried away with the Kardashians’ now notoriously ruthless business style, with a $100 million contract signed with Vivid Entertainment.

For years, the Kardashians allowed the story to unfold that Ray J was responsible for the leak, and was unable to defend himself due to the contract he had signed without legal counsel.

And the consequences for his life and career have been seismic, with multiple missed job opportunities and suicidal feelings, something he has had to deal with privately.

As he himself said: “I have sat in the shadows for over 14 years allowing the Kardashians to use my name, abuse my name, make billions of dollars for a decade and a half talking about a subject that has never been talked about.” Really.

I have never leaked anything. I have never leaked a sex tape in my life. It has never been a leak. It’s always been a deal and a partnership between Kris Jenner, Kim and myself, and we’ve always been partners since the beginning of this.

Additionally, Ray J, now 41, has the receipts he says support his claims, revealing details of a private Instagram direct message exchange with Kim recently, where she attempts to ignore vile sexual slurs made against him on the show. from Hulu. she jokingly blames her manager for threatening to release a new sex tape that doesn’t exist.

But tellingly, he also wrote: ‘I want you to know that I wish nothing but the best for you. This has hurt both of us in so many ways and I know we are aligned in wanting to move forward in our lives and not continue to be defined by something we did 20 years ago.

Now, nothing at this point will take away from the Kardashians’ impact on pop culture.

Like it or not, they are historical figures in the entertainment industry whose name will be as synonymous with Hollywood as Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, even if it may be, in the minds of traditionalists like me, for all the wrong reasons.

But that’s why the Ray J revelations matter.

The record must show that Kim was NOT the victim of a sex tape leak designed to harm her.

Now we’re told she set it all up herself because back in the 2000s owning a sex tape became an instant ticket to fame and fortune.

Clearly, that’s an indictment of our tasteless celebrity era.

As recently as the 1990s, there was an expectation that those who became famous did so because of a God-given talent.

I guess the Kardashians have a talent: selling their bodies for self-promotion at any cost and becoming rich and famous beyond imagination as a result.

Scholars will study the social consequences of such a change in the meaning of celebrity for years to come.

But that’s certainly why so many young hopefuls these days are encouraged to sign up and pose nude or worse on websites like OnlyFans.

Surely, if all is well, the Kardashians should be confident enough now to acknowledge the true circumstances of what catapulted them to fame and helped Kris land the E! reality series Keeping Up With The Kardashians that changed their lives and the world of celebrities forever.

They owe it to their business partner Ray J, who claims everyone still makes money off the Vivid deal, that their life is no longer continually ruined by the suggestion that he leaked the X-rated video without Kris and Kim’s explicit permission. .

If Kim is still the world’s most sought-after celebrity, even donning Marilyn Monroe’s historic Happy Birthday Mr President dress as the star guest at this week’s Met Gala, then why the heck is Ray J cancelled? It’s a hypocritical joke.

Let his words in our exclusive interview sink in in one final moment: “I felt suicidal because when you know something is real and it’s true and you’re watching a whole family create an empire out of a lie they’ve created themselves, It’s heartbreaking and disrespectful.” to all the artists who have been honest and true to their craft.

This has been a burden to me. It has been an embarrassment for me. My family has questioned my integrity, who I am as a person.

“Since we posted this sex tape, this has been the biggest lie in the industry in the history of entertainment.”

It’s time for Kris and Kim to come clean about their role in the leak of that infamous sex tape once and for all: The Hollywood history books on how and why the Kardashians became famous need to be corrected.
