Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has marked Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian striker failed to make any impact in their 4-2 loss to Arsenal.

The 28-year-old made his first Premier League start in over two months for the Blues against the Gunners.

However, he was barely noticed throughout the game as his problems continue in what has been a disappointing comeback season at Stamford Bridge.

Hasselbaink was unimpressed with Chelsea’s performance as a whole, but was especially critical of Lukaku.

He told Sky Sports: ‘For Chelsea today it was a really bad performance. Certain players are having a chance, Lukaku, (Malang) Sarr and (Andreas) Christensen.

‘Going back to Lukaku, he doesn’t do enough. If you want to be the man you have to run. You have to try to show that he annoys you. You need to want to suffer.

He doesn’t run, he doesn’t get into the gaps, he doesn’t demand the ball from his players.

He hooked up just 15 minutes into the second half with Kai Havertz replacing him.

“They play against a motivated Arsenal who have lost three in a row and want to prove something.

‘You have to get over them and at least show some passion. There was no passion from Lukaku and Sarr and Christensen can’t make those kinds of mistakes in these kinds of matches.

His criticism of Lukaku was later continued during post-match coverage in which he said that the Belgian striker, along with other players, were not good enough.

He said: “If you’re watching the game, they were way below par, but Lukaku, Christensen, Sarr and Alonso weren’t good enough for a Chelsea side that should be a Champions League or Premier League challenger. .

I know you can’t be number one anymore, but you still play for your pride.

‘Lukaku, you haven’t had the best games to prove that you’re the man and that you really want him. He walks and shows that desire that I did not see. That desire, I did not see it.

Asked to give his verdict on Lukaku’s performance, he added: “Very poor. I really want him to do well. This team needs a number nine.

“Then you see (Kai) Havertz come in, he goes into the spaces, he wants the ball, he runs left, right and center, it doesn’t all work out, but he’s trying.”

‘I’m not seeing that from Lukaku. He is leading the line, lead the line and do some more. I did not see it.

Lukaku joined Chelsea for £98m in the summer from Inter Milan, having left the club in 2014 for Everton.

He was widely expected to lead Chelsea’s challenge this season after his prolific goalscoring record at Inter Milan, where he scored 64 goals in 95 appearances.

However, the move did not go as planned and he has only scored five times in the Premier League this season, with his last goal coming in a 1-1 draw with Brighton on 29 December.

Lukaku has missed a number of big chances in recent games, including a nanny in the recent FA Cup semi-final win over Crystal Palace.
