All players linked with Derby County transfer as Wayne Rooney gears up for a big summer

Derby County is shaping up for a big summer of rebuilding under Chris Kirchner once the American businessman completes his takeover.

With six players signed by the club next season, the Rams will be busy in the transfer market as they look to plot their escape from League One. Rooney he has a blank canvas as he looks to build a competitive team for next season with Derby fans hoping for a swift return to the Championship.

But the Rams have also been linked with a number of players so far even though they can’t sign anyone or offer new contracts until they come out of administration.

aden flint

The former Cardiff City defender is a free agent after leaving the Bluebirds and will not be short of fans given his performances in the Championship.

The Rams are understood to be very interested in the centre-back who has made over 90 appearances and scored 12 goals for the Welsh side.

He has collected huge transfer fees during his career with Middlesbrough paying £7m to sign him from Bristol City.

And Cardiff then paid £4m to get it from the Robins. But he is now a free agent and is said to be tempted to move to Pride Park.

If he becomes one of Rooney’s first signings, he will return to the county having been born in Pinxton.

The former Manchester United defender knows Rooney well from their time together at Old Trafford and the full-back is currently a free agent after leaving Burnley.

A committed and tough defender, Bardsley has Premier League experience and would be seen as a significant hit if he were to join the Rams.

At 36, he is approaching the twilight of his career, but he still has a lot to offer.

His leadership and experience would certainly be a valuable asset to a team looking for a quick return to the Championship.

Lucas Molyneux

The Hartlepool striker has been offered a new deal to stay with the League Two side but has so far yet to accept their offer.

He has been linked with a number of clubs in League One and has produced a number of impressive performances.

Molyneux helped Hartlepool win promotion from the National League and scored 12 goals in all competitions last year.

But he is in no rush to make a decision on his future with the striker drawing a lot of attention and would be available on a free transfer.

Derby are said to be one of those clubs monitoring his situation, although Portsmouth have been reported to have recently pulled out of a move for him.

The 28-year-old left Preston North End after his Championship club contract expired and racked up more than 200 appearances, scoring 38 goals along the way.

But coach Ryan Lowe has chosen to release the attacker, who can operate from the front.

Derby are interested in the attacker, but so are League One Bolton and newly promoted Rotherham United.

But Rooney hopes to revamp his forward line in the summer as he looks to build an attack capable of taking the club back to the Championship.

The 33-year-old striker was part of the Sheffield Wednesday side that missed out on the League One play-off final after losing to Sunderland in the semi-finals.

He scored 17 goals last season and is reportedly attracting interest from Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Derby have also been credited with an interest, but with the 33-year-old having one year left on his contract, the Owls will want a fee.

That may rule him out for a return to Derby, where he scored three goals in 11 appearances during a loan spell in 2021.

More than likely Derby will be in the market for free transfers rather than spending fees on players.
